Facebook Timeline: Updating Your Privacy Settings

After months of delays Facebook's new Timeline feature is finally here and, as promised, it's actually a pretty great addition to the site. It isn't a mandatory change (at least not yet it's not) so you'll need to manually switch over to the new system by clicking here. Once you've done so you'll have up to one week to play around with the settings to your liking before your new page is made public.

Of course, new Facebook updates also mean new Facebook privacy settings, and because Timeline is an entirely new feature your previous settings won't automatically limit the amount of information you share. Here's how to fix that:

The Art of the Brick

I'm not sure how they were able to pull it off but the fine folks over at the Mulvane Art Museum somehow managed to land one of Nathan Sawaya's "The Art of the Brick" exhibits for the residents of Topeka earlier this summer. The collection (one of three currently circling the world) features pieces made entirely out of Lego, and they are incredibly detailed. Below are some of my favorites from what I was able to see, but if you want to see more then make sure to check out Sawaya's website for pictures of some of the stuff in his other exhibits as well as new stuff he's working on in his studio. And remember, you have until September 18th to check it out for yourself, so get on that!

Words of Wisdom from Tracy Jordan: Part III

The fifth season of 30 Rock has ended and the recent news that the show won't be coming back until next January means that it'll be at least seven months before new episodes hit the air. So, in the meantime, here are the best lines from Tracy Morgan's character, Tracy Jordan, from the fifth season. Community: The Complete First Season for $12.99

I know it's not really worth getting worked-up over, but I am constantly bothered by the fact that millions of people tune into garbage like Glee, Grey's Anatomy, and American Idol week-after-week while quality tv shows like Arrested Development and Freaks and Geeks are met with early cancelations after struggling to find their audiences despite critical acclaim. Community, which premiered on NBC last fall, is another show that falls into the category of a quality television program with low ratings. If you're at all curious to check it out you can head over to the show's Hulu page where they've got a few episodes and clips available for free viewing or, if you're smart, you can take my word for it and blind-buy the first season by clicking here.

For whatever reason, the pre-order price has been slashed from the regular MSRP of $39.95 to $17.99, which is already a great deal. However, by typing in the coupon code SONYFIVE, you'll get an additional five dollars off of the set which means you'll be paying roughly fifty cents per episode. The only real downside here is that Amazon's free shipping doesn't kick in until the twenty-five dollar mark, but I'm sure you can find something else on the site to pick up around twelve bucks.

Again, it's a great show and I really can't imagine anyone picking this up and not getting more than their fair share of laughs from it (especially considering the price), so give it a chance and thank me later.

More Facebook Privacy Nonsense (Or How to Disable Facebook Places)

You may or may not have heard but Facebook is currently in the middle of rolling out a new feature on their site, Facebook Places, that automatically allows your friends to know where it is that you're currently at (a bar, the grocery store, your home) at all times of the day via your mobile device's GPS. This is an exciting and welcome addition for users who feel like they need even more excuses to let you know what it is they're doing or thinking throughout every moment of their incredibly important lives. It's also a welcome feature for folks who have been patiently waiting for years to share even more of their personal information with a large marketing company whose revenues exceed one billion dollars annually.

The best part, of course, is that the site's programmers have been kind enough to automatically sign you up for it. The settings aren't quite as horrible as they could be (and when I say that I mean that they're not set up so that everyone on the internet can view your location), but there are still a few things you'll need to change with your settings to turn the feature off completely. Here's how to do it:

1) Once you've got yourself logged-in you'll need to click on "Account" on the upper-righthand part of the screen and then click on "Privacy Settings."

2) From this page you'll need to click on the "Custom" option and then the "Customize Settings" link listed below all of the site's features. If you haven't gone through to check your privacy settings in awhile, now would be a good time to do so.

3) The first section of the page lists the things that you share with others. The first thing you'll need to do is change your "Places I check in" option. It should be set at "Friends Only" by default so you'll need to click on "Customize" and then change it to "Only Me."

4) Below "Places I check in" you'll sea a box next to the option "Include me in 'People Here Now' after I check in." Make sure to disable this.

5) On the second section of the page you'll see what information your friends are allowed to share. Go to "Friends can check me in to Places" and disable it.

6) Finally, go back to your "Privacy Settings" page and click on "Edit your settings" under "Applications and Websites" in the lower-lefthand corner. In the "Info accessible through your friends" click "Edit Settings." Anything here with a checkmark next to it is information about you that is available to applications that your friends, not you, use. It's best to uncheck them all but the "Places" option should be the very last one on the right.

Words of Wisdom from Tracy Jordan: Part II

Last summer Aaron Cohen over at Unlikely Words went through the first three seasons of 30 Rock and posted every single line that Tracy Morgan's character, Tracy Jordan, had ever said (you can view my favorites by clicking here).  Just a week after the end of the current season he's already transcribed all of Tracy's lines from season four and just like last time I'm posting my favorites. And, if you can't wait until season five, Tracy Morgan has released a memoir I Am the New Black full of similarly ridiculous comments about his experiences growing up as well as his time on SNL.

I'll Never Be LOST Again

There have been a lot of horrible and corny Lost-related videos to hit the internet over the course of the last six years, but a new hip-hop group that is calling themselves The Injustice Gang has made an awesome track about the show's upcoming finale and I felt like it was my responsibility as a human being to share it with you fine ladies and gentlemen.

Another Great Deal for Super Mario Galaxy 2

Super Mario Galaxy is easily the must-own title of the Nintendo Wii. The graphics, gameplay mechanics, and motion controls are essentially perfect and the game is more or less a sequel to Super Mario 64 which was one of my favorite games growing up. Since the original has sold almost nine million copies over the last few years and was universally praised by every single critic that has ever played it I figured that at least one or two of you might own it and might be interested in its sequel.

Amazon.com occasionally runs deals for pre-ordering games and they're currently doing a pretty amazing one for Super Mario Galaxy 2.
